When you think of 3d printing, images of scientists or industrial designers fabricating prototypes probably come to mind. But starting today, the process is getting the fine arts treatment. The Esther M. Klein Art Gallery in Philadelphia is opening a new exhibit called “The FAB Show,” which features the work of designers, professors, and artists using the medium.

The show features work from Fab@Home, a group attempting to get open-source fabrication kits into the hands of entrepreneurs; Makerbot, which makes open source robot and 3d printer kits; Bathsheba Grossman, who creates metal sculptures based on intricate patterns and mathematical oddities; Mark Ganter, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Washington who has pioneered 3d ceramic printing; and Sabin+Jones LabStudio, which brings together architects, mathematicians, material scientists, and cell biologists to render biological system models.
